Yes, clearly. Although I imagine that if one thinks they're necessary in the first place, this could just confirm the idea: "Imagine what it would be like without these tools!" The corn would probably be shooting out of people's hands and poking out eyes.

I guess if the corn wasn't really hot you could go without holders, but at that point you may as well just eat it out of a can.
