One could argue that Buddy Ryan was a great coach. One could also argue that he was an overrated douchecannon. After he was let go by the Bears he accomplished fuckall and managed to alienate everyone he came in contact with in football except for a few talented players who thrived in his relatively uncomplicated system. I've been all set with Buddy Ryan and his offspring since about 1986 or so.

In fairness, SKO said great "head" coach, and PenSchmoe took it out of context to in a failed attempt at cleverness.  Buddy was a great DC, but a horrible head coach.

Really the "coach's son" part was the least important aspect of my argument, since history is littered with failed coach's sons (Mike Shula would be a far better example than Rex Ryan, who I think will get another chance at a head-coaching job and will fare better if he doesn't chain himself to a failed first round draft pick at QB. Better coaches than him have made the same mistake). Stew is old, and in his day you were required to work the same occupation as your father, so I thought he'd understand that system.

I'd place more faith in Sonny based on the fact that he was on Leach's first staff at Texas Tech, so he's worked with Leach, Holgorsen, Kingsbury, Sumlin, Briles, and many of the other successful OCs and head coaches that have come out of that tree. Considering the fact that he was an OC at Arizona  and thus avoids the usual "can his scheme succeed in BIG BOY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE HERP DERP" that's always stupid, and that he's been a successful head coach, I think it's a great hire.
