Playing Iowa, Idaho, Eastern Illinois, Purdue, Kent State, and Akron (and Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Massachusetts, Ball State, Toledo, and Western Michigan) helps.  NIU has a pretty good team but they don't play anybody. 

Thought now would be a good time to point out the following:

Number of Big 10 teams NIU has beaten this year: 2
Number of Big 10 teams U of I & NU have beaten this year, combined:  0

It's all very nice and my whole family is NIU so I hope they do well. But they're not going to a BCS game again. If they did they'd get murdered. Their aim is to win the MAC and that's pretty much the best they can do while they're in that conference.

Wouldn't you agree?

Beating the dregs of the Big Ten is great and no, Illinois can't beat anyone (and would lose to NIU), but is that something to be proud of? Beating Illinois? Everyone does it.

Of course their aim is to win the MAC (for the 4th year in a row)

I lol'd. Make it winning the MAC 40 years in a row. Still wouldn't mean much more than a mundane win over Purdue or Illinois or this gutless Northwestern team that's pissed away its season the last five weeks.

Wait, how can a team coached by future USC/TEXAS/CHICAGO BEARS coach Jebus H. Fitzgerald be gutless?  It makes no sense.

Because Jeebie Fits can be pretty frustrating when it comes to game/clock strategy and his beloved ultra-conservative, play-not-to-lose, let's-just-protect-this-precious-third-quarter-lead-and-never-ever-score-another-point-ever-again mentality.  He just doesn't have the confidence and swagger that a cabinet full of MAC trophies will give you.
