In news worthy of "on another note", the Cubs have hired Rob Deer as assistant hitting coach.

Hopefully his coaching method is showing guys film of his 1409 career strikeouts over 11 seasons, and just says, "See that? Yeah, don't do that."

Mind blowing.  Deer may be a nice guy, but who would take him seriously when he advocates plate discipline?  By the way.  What the hell does an assistant hitting coach do?

Striking out like Rob Deer is not what I was led to believe the Cubs Way would be about.  Epstink is terrible.

"I don't teach the way I hit. I understand how to hit .300. I know what it takes. We tell the guys to be selectively aggressive. We want that to be their approach. We tell them 'Be patiently aggressive.' That's our motto. What does it mean? If you get a good pitch to hit and you take it, that's your fault. We don't ever want to take aggressiveness away. But, we don't want to swing at bat pitches, either. I'll be the first to admit I don't want them to hit like I did."

So, don't swing at bad pitches, but swing at good pitches, but hit them when you swing, preferrably out of the ballpark or somewhere in fair territory where one of the 9 guys on it would have to run  a long way to get it? This hitting stuff sounds easy!
