Epstink is terrible. Doesn't he understand that Chuck's plan calls for them to lose 115 games?

If I'd known he was going to sign Jackson, I wouldn't have been so positive on their winning percentage.

Could someone explain to me why the hip kids on the internet are crapping on this signing? Should the Cubs only pursue superstars in free agency?

Chuck would be the opposite of a "hip kid," correct?

Yeah, I was referring more to our esteemed interweb overlords A. Dolan and H.J. Essian. Chuck's just trying to fit in.

He's a banker, which would lead me to believe he's another SABRWeenie.

But, then, why is he wrong all the time?

RV nailed it:

QuoteChuck enjoys speculating about salary caps and hirings & firings more than he enjoys actually watching sports

Sports is mostly an excuse for Chuck to talk about cash flows and amusement taxes.

On that comment, I was just being Internet Chuck.

RWC thinks a Jackson signing is fine as Theo probably projects him to be a #4 or a #5 on a division-title team in 2015 or 2016.  The money isn't huge nor is the deal too long, and with the expiring contracts they have, it's not like they need the money elsewhere (not including the stadium).  Further, they have almost no starting pitching coming up that projects to be better than this guy, and they need arms.  He's made 31+ starts every year since 2007 and he's only 28.

So: Polite clapping.

Every signing so far this winter (including Jackson, which is still not announced) has been solid and low-risk.

All of them except Jackson have been short-term and relatively low cost. If anybody catches fire, they can be flipped for prospects.

I'm very unaccustomed to seeing a Cubs front office having their shit together for the long term like this.

I too am befuddled by this cautious and considerate front office.

I liked the signings until Chuck said he liked the signings. Now I'm on the fence.

The more bodies in between Casey Coleman and the pitcher's mound (and all the other Casey Coleman types left over from Nice Choice Jim), the better.

I think Andy just uses Twitter to shit on everything, because that's his schtick. As for the second person you mentioned, I don't know who that is.

Edwin Jackson is terribly worse than Anibal Sanchez, at a very reduced rate. Scott Boras sucks.
