Boy the Bears are going to be a complete disaster aren't they

In theory I like that there are 43 guys that are playing in their contract years. It also gives Emery the chance to evaluate who he wants to keep and who he doesn't.

But did anyone hear Robbie Gould on ESPN radio last night? It was probably the most frank discussion about contracts and a current players' front office that I've heard.

It's not about those other guys. It's about Cutler. That contract, if it comes, will determine all others. Not just dollar amounts, but whether they bring back veterans or not. Charles Tillman's extension makes sense if Jay's sticking around and has a good year and you think you're a yearly contender. If you're starting over with a rookie QB next year it doesn't make sense to hand out tons of money to older guys. My gut tells me the Jay extension will come around week 8 if he's having the year they expect, and everything falls into place after that.
I will vow, for the sake of peace, not to complain about David Ross between now and his first start next year- 10/26/2015

Frankly I think 90% of all talk of player unhappiness over contracts is overrated in terms of how it affects play. Briggs has spent half his career bitching about his contract. Forte's two best years came when he was bitching about his contract. The big deal over "taking care of #1" in a contract year is overrated when you consider that secure roster spots are an illusion for almost every player, every year in the league, so everyone is constantly having to "look out for #1" regardless of whether there's two or three years left.

All that. And I choose to believe the Bears are going to be awesome because the NFL is a crapshoot and if they do suck we'll have plenty of time to bitch about it once the actual suckage begins.

I also don't buy that any of these extensions except Jay's get more expensive the longer they wait. Did Robbie miss the extremely depressed market for veteran players last year? If Revis can't get guaranteed $, Asomugah can't find a job, and Winfield, Charles Woodson etc have all struggled to find jobs/decent cash... I don't think Tillman, Jennings, Gould, any of them have values that are skyrocketing. Emery can afford to wait.

So you think Emery saying there won't be any extensions during the season was a lie? That'd be great.

Even if there's not they have until March before players can even think of leaving, so the clock isn't ticking quite so fast.

And yeah, I do. Every year we hear players and teams say contract negotiations during the season are distracting and they won't do it and then players get extensions anyway.

Basically that he's prepared to have a great season and leave because the Bears won't pay him.

Unlike .900 OPS 1B, good kickers actually do grow on trees.

Many of them get overripe and spoil real fast, but they just keep growing back.

Cutler and Melton are actually parts of the core. The rest of the players are not. They tagged Melton and can do it again. They naturally want to make sure Jay plays well before giving him his extension, but if the offense is finally "fixed" then Emery has the flexibility to make some painful moves with the aging players on the D if he has to. And Robbie, as you said, is a damn kicker. This situation is far from fucked.
