This dude is such a class act. Compare Chris Coghlan. Coghlan loses his regular spot for like a month in 2015 and can't wait to start bitching about it to reporters. Heyward struggles all year, and doesn't ever blame the team for changing his stance. Doesn't complain about all the tinkering even once. Gets benched in the playoffs and doesn't say a word. Instead he just keeps bringing his solid D, puts some good hits and baserunning together, and calls a team meeting for a reality check that rallies them to win the damn World Series.

There's no one I want to see succeed more next year than Heyward. What a pro.

I'd rather see Kris Bryant succeed.

Really going out on a limb there, big guy.

That's kind of the...never mind.
I can't believe I even know these people. I'm ashamed of my internet life.

His 2017 spring training OPS is 200 points lower than his 2016 regular season. This is fine.

He hit a homer. It'll work out.

But really I can't imagine getting worked up over spring training stats. Kris Bryant's OPS is also 200 points lower than what he managed in the regular season last year, and he doesn't have the excuse of having completely retooled his swing. Heyward gets until the middle of May before I write him off as a complete and utter failure, since he starts slow even in good years.
I will vow, for the sake of peace, not to complain about David Ross between now and his first start next year- 10/26/2015

Spring Training doesn't count for shit. But Heyward is probably always going to suck offensively and the Cubs will regret signing him, minus his stellar defense and inspirational World Series speech.

I've read a number of articles this year that looked at players similar to Heyward who inexplicably crashed while still in their prime, and then what they did the next year, and the vast majority of them positively regress back to something resembling their career averages at least, usually. I don't know if Heyward will ever be a great offensive player in a Cubs uniform, but barring some unknown injury I really don't think he's broken forever and he should at least be an average hitter this year.

Yeah. Guys who are good, then suck for a year, never get better:

BA    OBP    SLG    OPS    OPS+
.300   .347   .408   .755   100
.307   .341   .432   .773   111
.283   .323   .430   .753   102
.245   .284   .347   .631   73
.292   .339   .438   .777   115

Know who that is?

For reference, Heyward's OPS+ has been:
131, 93, 117, 114, 109, 117, 70.

That's Starlin, but that's actually not the example I'd want to use since he kinda cratered again the year after his bounce-back campaign. Although he and Heyward are very different hitters since Heyward is usually a patient hitter who walks a lot, so he doesn't have to hit that much to be a useful offensive player.

I didn't say that Heyward wouldn't get better; I just feel that his "better" is still probably not all that good.

I'm still holding out hope that Jason develops an appetite for Cardinal tears, making my thread title awesome instead of embarrassing. Unlike most of my threads, which are uniformly great.

I think simply by being part of the 2016 World Champion Cubs (not to mention several of the great catches he did make against STL this year and his whole Big Moving Speech thing that would get him a statue outside of Busch had he done it in a Cardinals uniform) he has garnered his share of Cardinal tears.

After being ripped as not wanting to stay in Dogpatch because he didn't want to lead.

I mean, regardless of what happens with Heyward's offense, or his contract, do the Cubs win the 2016 World Series without him?
