Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace today announced the hiring of Matt Nagy as the club's 16th head coach in franchise history.

Yawn.

Last 10 Bears hires:
1) Two-time former Head Coach with conference championships both spots.
2) Former CFL head coach (with Grey Cup Championship) who also was an OC for a couple NFL teams, including 2002 Raiders
3) Former defensive coordinator and protege of Tony Dungy and Rod Marinelli, two of the top defensive coaches in football
4) Lifer assistant coach who worked for Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville and was in no position to laugh at the Bears and hang up after the McGinnis fiasco
5) Hot DC flavor du jour who was a Jimmy Johnson protege.
6) Ex-Bear player who went on to be a pet of Tom Landry but desperately wanted to repair his relationship with George Halas.
7) Defensive coordinator in Minnesota who coached the Purple People Eaters and had a good relationship with Jim Finks.
8) Former NFL player who got into coaching in the WFL and had some success after 3 years there.
9) Longtime Bears assistant because, who cares
10) Longtime Bears assistant since the other longtime Bears assistant, George Allen, decided to coach the Rams.

The selection of Trestman was the most unconventional followed by Ditka. Wannstedt and Fox maybe provided the most buzz (Pardee after that?).  Lovie was probably the best considered, reasoned hire, followed by Wannstedt and Neill Armstrong (and maybe Fox). Pardee might not have been unconventional, but it was a ballsy pick (was it Mugsy or GSH who made that choice?). Dooley, Gibron, Jauron, and Nagy are the most uninspired. Maybe Nagy will work out as the unconventional choices, or the ones that generate the most buzz, or the best-considered choices aren't guaranteed to.

Ditka, Lovie and Pardee worked out the best; Wannstedt, Jauron and Armstrong had their pluses; the rest (Fox, Trestman, Gibron and Dooley) were unmitigated disasters.

Nagy is the most formulaic hire. Just go out and talk to a bunch of coordinators and pick one.

Dunno. Wanny seems almost more formulaic. Mike McCaskey: "What team is good right now? Dallas. Who's their defensive (because Bears defense bark, bark) coordinator? Wannstedt. OK, let's hire him."

Wanny was THE HIRE. Remember, the Bears had to outbid the Giants.

I used to refer to end of the Wannstedt Era as "Gibronesque" but that was probably unfair, considering that, taken as a whole, the Wannstedt years were at the least decidedly mediocre.  At least Wanny took the Bears to the playoffs once, before things started careening south.

Trestman was the first Bears coach in my lifetime to fail to make at least 1 trip to the playoffs.  Fox is the second.  These are truly dark times; we've practically exceeded the Dooley/Gibron Era.   I suppose it's time things begin turning around.  The Bears are beginning their 8th decade in a run that has tallied only 2 world championships.
Just a sloppy, undisciplined team.  Garbage.

Yeah, I get that. I'm just hinging on the word "formulaic." To me, "hire the 'IT' guy" is about as formulaic as it gets.

Not sure how formulaic it is to hire a guy who, 8 years ago, was MoveWithMatt.com.

When did he change his name to Nagy?

Right after the sale fell apart in Storm Lake.

Right after the sale fell apart in Storm Lake.

His first ploy at getting a HC job was to- send a moving truck to Kirk Ferentz's home.
